With all of the stress of being stuck at home, LOTS of people of all ages are turning to bike riding lately to get out of the house! This is a wonderful sight to see so many kids and families on bikes!
But…sadly, I’m not seeing a lot of people wearing helmets while riding. Given the current pandemic and stress over taxing our healthcare system with any injury or accident, some serious cyclists are wary of riding outdoors right now for fear of being in an accident and needing medical services. So for all those who haven’t been on a bike in a long time, riding without a helmet isn’t the best decision.
Yes, I’m a child of the 70’s and 80’s and we all survived riding bikes without helmets and in cars without seatbelts, but times have changed. Bike helmets have been proven to reduce the severity of head and injuries in crashes of all types. From the slow speed fall over in the driveway to the bike vs. car accident, lives and brain function have been saved by helmets.
Wearing a helmet right now could be the difference in scrapes, cuts, or an impact that allows you to take care of yourself in the comfort of your home without unnecessary exposure to COVID-19 in a hospital emergency room.

Bike shops are considered essential businesses and most are providing curbside pick up for retail items. So if you’re in need of a bike helmet, go check out one of our many local shops and support small business right now. They could also tune up your bike so that it’s as safe as you are with your helmet!
